Life cycle assessment of reciprocating engine component in Finland: a case study

This paper presents the environmental impacts of reciprocating engine component (REC) made cast iron and low-alloy steel in Finland using life cycle assessment (LCA). The study uses primary data provided by a machining shop covering cradle-to-gate with functional unit 1 tonne REC. was carried out CML-baseline, resulting eleven impact categories emphasising global warming potential (GWP). results show that upstream process, including forging foundry, to manufacture material inputs contributes highest among all categories, making up about 52–97% total impacts. For GWP, emission REC is 2926 kg CO2 eq. Sensitivity analysis indicates are most critical parameters process efficiency technological advance prominent. highlights importance selecting suppliers, energy sources, transportation modes.
